Where do I start my blog? What is the best blog platform to earn money? These may be your first questions in your blogging journey.
It really is an important question and lays the building blocks of your blog. It can affect your frustration level, the speed and performance of your blog, and your ability to customize it.
Not to mention, you need to pick the best blog platform to monetize your blog!
Therefore, choosing the best blogging platform to make money in the beginning is a must-do on your blog-starting journey.
So read on! Below is the information you need about some of the most popular blogging sites and platforms out there so you can make the right choice for you.
What is a Blogging Platform?
A blogging platform is just software that helps you build and maintain a blog. It manages and publishes your content for you.
They are content management systems that include a lot of capabilities in one place. Adding images, designing the look of your blog and more.
Some blogging platforms give you more flexibility and customization and even let you build a website.
Best Blogging Platforms to Make Money
Here are some of the platforms you can choose for your blog. Option 1, WordPress is our top choice.
Options 9-18 are website builders that allow an easy start for your blog. However, they don’t provide the customization you need in a blog site for making an income.
1. WordPress.org (powered by a blog hosting site)
The best blogging platform to make money is WordPress.
In order to have your blog on WordPress, you will need to choose what is called a web hosting site. To basically “host” your blog.
We have several blog hosting site options listed below that you will need to use this platform.
Technically WordPress is the “blogging platform” and they are the blog hosting sites, but since it is the most important blogging platform to use if you want to make money with your blog, I have several options (#9-18) including it.
Not to be confused with WordPress.com, WordPress.org gives you the capabilities you need to build a money-making blog. It is an open source platform that was actually built for blogging.
Whatever you choose as your blog site, do not choose WordPress.com options! You will lose your url and blog customization abilities. You need a self hosted blog.
While it may take a bit more time to learn how to use WordPress.org, it will give you more flexibility. And, if you purchase premium design themes that come with customer support, it is a good way to get help when first setting up your blog.
With WordPress.org, you will need a web hosting company like the ones detailed below in options 9-18. But, the great news is they all make it easy to set up your blog on the WordPress.org platform.
Thousands and thousands of free and premium plugins give you the ability to add just about any feature you want to.
Plugins are extremely easy to install and generally easy to use. They give you additional capabilities like placing ads, and customizing the look you want.
For this reason, we do not suggest using WordPress.com. Instead you should opt for a self hosted WordPress blog built on WordPress.org and powered by one of the blog hosting sites listed below!
WordPress.org my top choice of blogging platform for starting a blog and making an income.

2. Site123
Site123, as the name indicates, helps you set up your site as easy as 1-2-3! With customized templates based on niche, you can choose and implement a design for your website or blog with little effort.
It is quick and easy to sign up, choose a theme, and get started with content creation.
It is important to note that Site123 is not a “Drag-and-drop” website builder. However, there are a lot of page elements you can choose from to get the look you want.
One advantage of Site123 is they offer a lot of plugins so you can add functionality to your site. Plus, they have eCommerce functionality, making it an excellent site to earn money from your blog or website.

- Plans start as low as $10.80/month
Pros:
- Easy set up of your site

Cons:
- More expensive than its direct competitors, with limits on bandwidth and storage
- Not as good a value as a self-hosting option
- Less design and layout customization available
3. Wix
Wix is a free website builder, although the free option requires Wix ads on your site. It is primarily a general website builder, but can also be used to start a profitable blog.
Designs are mobile-friendly and it is an easy-to-use solution whether you are setting up an online store, or starting a blog.
You can start from scratch with your web design or pick from templates and customize them for your site. Or for an even easier set up, if you answer a few questions you can actually get a free website designed just for you!
It features an easy drag and drop builder and the ability to have animations, scroll effects and even video backgrounds.
I suggest that you choose to upgrade to a premium plan. This requires a small monthly charge for additional features, but includes $300 in ad vouchers and the removal of Wix ads from your site.
Pricing:
- Plans range from free to monthly depending on the level chosen. ($13, $17, $22, and $39 per month)
Pros:
- Easy-to-use drag and drop builder
- Lots of available design options and templates
- Hosting included, quickt o set up
- A.I. feature will design your blog automatically based on your input

4. Squarespace
Squarespace is an all-in-one website builder. It is super easy to use and simple to set up, making it great for beginners. However, it does not come with as many choices for customization as other blogging platforms do.
If you want to have eCommerce capabilities and sell products on your blog or website, you will need the upgraded, more expensive plan and have to pay 3% transaction fees. But this is a platform to make money!
Pricing:
- Monthly plans start at $12 and go up to $40
Pros:
- Free domain
- Hosting and domain included
- 24/7 customer support
- Website analytics provided
- SEO features
- Variety of template options
- Easy-to-use backend design
Cons:
- Not as many third-party integrations, no support for plugins or apps so less customization
- Limited to using the platform’s features
- More expensive than other options
- No phone support, only chat support online
5. WEebly
Weebly is a website builder and blogging platform that includes a drag and drop builder and easy-to-use features. They offer a free plan as well.
It is great if you want to quickly create a blog or website, but if you are looking for the ability to change CSS or HTML code for customization you won’t have that.
There are a lot of built-in tools with the platform however. For instance, you can add an online store, contact form etc. without installing an extension.
Pricing:
- Plans start at free!
Pros:
- Drag-and-drop builder
- Good SEO features built-in
- Easy to use
Cons:
- Limited third-party integrations
- The free plan has Weebly branding and subdomain which I don’t suggest for your blog
- Weebly hosts the site which makes migrating your site or switching to another platform very difficult (with the wordpress.org self-hosted options, you own all the content and can move or switch easily)

6. Blogger
Blogger is one of the popular blogging platforms since it is a free platform. Because it is owned by Google, it has some quick and easy integrations like with Google AdSense.
All you need to get started is a Google account, so when it comes to easily starting a blog, this one nails it.
However, as with any free platform, there are many cons. You won’t have your own url, or a clean easy to use url. The url will have “blogspot” in it and be very long and clunky.
Pricing:
- Free platform
Pros:
- Super easy to get started
- Integrated with Google AdSense so you can earn cash quickly
- Easy to use
Cons:
- Not many third-party integrations or plugins for customization
- Limited capabilities
- Google will technically own your content and not you!
- Clunky url
7. Medium
Another well-known, free blogging platform is Medium. It is a very easy place to start a blog. And, it comes with a built in readership of people who visit the site.
Medium is essentially made up of a bunch of blogs and websites, many of whom also post here as well as on their own site.
But is has all the same drawbacks we’ve mentioned with these free blogging platforms that have little ownership or customization.
In addition, you will never be ablet o have display ads on your site which seriously limits the cash you can make. The only way to earn is through their Partner Program, so it is very limited.
Pricing:
- Free
Pros:
- Easy to get started
- There are already a lot of potential readers using the site that might see your content
Cons:
- Not many third-party integrations or plugins for customization
- You won’t own your domain or have a clen url
- You can’t use display ads
8. WordPress.com
Yes, a second WordPress in the list is confusing. The first one we mentioned, the one we recommend is WordPress.org. Which you use by choosing a host site which will publish your blog to it.
But, there is also a WordPress.com which is one of the free blogging platforms out there. It is very easy to get started on, you just create an account.
But, your url will be something like yourname.wordpress.com, so it isn’t clean and you won’t own it.
WordPress also places their own ads on your site! That you don’t make any money from, so not ideal. And you can’t use plugins for customization, so again, not recommended.
Pricing:
- Free
Pros:
- Easy to use
- WordPress team takes care of load speeds and site backups for you
Cons:
- No plugins for customization
- You won’t own your domain or have a clean url
- They place their own ads on your site and you can’t earn from those

9. BlueHost
Bluehost is a super easy way to start your blog, and the way many of the pros began. What makes Bluehost a no-brainer choice, is you can get your domain url, hosting, and WordPress.org platform all at once.

If you want improved performance or features like automatic backup, you can opt for a slightly more expensive plan.
Bluehost is officially recommended by WordPress, so you can trust it is a safe bet to start your blog on the WordPress platform with Bluehost.
And, since the monthly price is so low, this makes it a best blogging platform choice for making money as your overhead is low.
While I am currently with WPX, I started with Bluehost and used them for over a year. It was great and this is probably the cheapest and easiest way to start blogging.

What to Look For in a Blogging Platform
Reviewing all of the options below will help you get a good idea on how to choose the best blogging platform for earning money.
But, you should be considering a few key factors in choosing the best site to host your blog:
Blog customization abilities
Make sure you will have options for changing the structure and look of your blog, as well as adding functions such as ads or ecommerce.
For a platform to make money, you need a blog site that allows for ads and eCommerce! And, you need a platform that allows you to customize your blog to your liking.
Whether that means choosing a custom domain name, selecting a unique theme, or adding custom plugins.
Look for a platform that offers a range of customization options so you can make your blog look and feel exactly how you want it to.
Speed of loading time for your blog
The time it takes for your blog site to load can affect your SEO which affects your google ranking.
There are a lot of things you will have to do over time to improve your speed, but starting with a blogging platform designed for performance will help lay a good foundation.
site Security and blog backup options included
Having your site protected from malware and hacking is super important! And it is much safer if a blogging platform or site includes backup for you. That way if anything ever goes wrong, they can restore all your months of work with the click of a button.
Monetization Potential
Of course, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a blogging platform is monetization potential.
This is how you earn money blogging! You want a platform that makes it easy to monetize your blog, whether that means through advertising, affiliate marketing, or other means.
Look for a platform that offers a range of monetization options and makes it easy to integrate them into your blog.
Customer support and assistance
When you are a newbie blogger, and even when you are a pro, having access to someone to help you with issues is so important! Trying to fix things all by yourself is never a good idea.
Choosing a blog site that provides customer service can make your blogging life a whole lot easier. I know from experience! I am a current customer of WPX for my blog web host and their customer service response time is almost immediate!
Ease of Use
Another important factors to consider when choosing a blogging platform is ease of use.
You want a platform that is easy to set up and use, even if you have no experience with blogging.
Look for a platform that offers a user-friendly interface, intuitive navigation, and a range of helpful features. However, you may have to sacrifice a little ease of use for more customization.
Choosing one a super easy to set up free platform like Blogger won’t be worth it in the end.
Other blogging platforms not recommended
There are a quite a few blogging platforms that are free and super easy-to-setup that you may see in your google searches that I wanted to mention because I do not suggest them!
Platforms like blogger, wordpress.com (not to be confused with wordpress.org which I do suggest) and blogspot are just a few.
While these may seem like a great way to start your blog, don’t! You won’t own your url or be able to have a clean domain name and full blog customization options. When it comes to the best blog sites for making money, these are not it.
So if you are ready to start your own blog, then choose one of the best blogging platform options above!

SHould I Choose a Free Blogging Platform?
No! As we’ve mentioned above, you should not opt for a free blog hosting site. There are many disadvantages to these sites such as not owning your url, not having a clean and easy url and limitations to blog customization.
Blogger and other free blogging platforms are not really the best choice.
It is especially unnecessary since you can get a web hosting plan with a company like BlueHost for so cheap!
